Commons for Kids & Molina Healthcare - Raising Health Awareness

Ever wonder how we’re able to offer free programming at Columbus Commons? In many cases, it’s through generous support from sponsors.

This year, Molina Healthcare is sponsoring Commons for Kids. This means the family-favorite event featuring carousel rides, bounce houses, crafts, story times, and other activities can be provided free of charge to the public.

Why is a healthcare organization interested in sponsoring a free event for kids? As Molina Healthcare’s Jose Cos puts it, “the event’s emphasis on physical activity is a great fit with Molina’s core values.”

Molina Healthcare takes a unique approach to what they do, focusing on health education, increasing access to health literacy, and educating and influencing people to make healthy decisions. As Cos explains,  “In addition to providing high-quality healthcare services to over 300,000 Ohioans, Molina strives to promote wellness and improved health outcomes through direct engagement with members and the general community.”

Founded in 1980 by an emergency room physician, C. David Molina, MD, who noticed that low-income patients were coming to the emergency room in need of general health services, Molina Healthcare is now one of five Medicaid providers in Ohio.

By participating in the weekly Commons for Kids program, Molina Healthcare is able to help fulfill their mission, while also supporting ours – providing free, high-quality programming to all Central Ohioans.

But the synergies between Columbus Commons and Molina’s mission don’t end there; we both endeavor to foster a sense of community. Before Columbus Commons was created, Downtown Columbus lacked a vibrant focal point – a place for the community to gather. Still a family-operated company, Molina Healthcare helps bring together the community around becoming healthier and happier.

Rather than relying solely on television commercials and media, Molina Healthcare prefers a more grass roots approach – engaging with the community through events and gatherings. At Commons for Kids, they are able to reach a broad audience, which they educate about healthcare by providing straight-forward health information, engaging kids in healthy activities, and supplying families with healthy recipes.

Be sure to stop by the Molina Healthcare tent at Commons for Kids on Fridays from 9 am to 1 pm throughout the summer. Click here for the schedule and details about the free event.
